Impact of Social Media on Learning Abilities among Nursing Students

Introduction- Nursing students are using smart phones, tablet computers, laptops, and numerous other electronic devices every day. They are accessing information for class discussions, doing research for class topics, and receiving pertinent class information. The present study was conducted to determine the impact of social media on learning ability of nursing students. Materials & Methods- The present study was conducted on 210 nursing student of both genders. General information such as name, age, gender, year of nursing etc, was recorded. All were provided with performa containing usage of internet, awareness regarding social web sites etc. were noted. Results- Males were 90 and females were 120. The difference was non- significant (P- 0.12). Age group 17- 20 years had 24 males, 35 females, 20-23 years had 38 males and 47 females, 23- 26 years had 18 males and 20 females and >26 years had 10 males and 18 females. The difference was significant (P- 0.01). In BSc, males were 35 and females were 50, in ANM, males were 25 and females were 30 and in GNM, males were 30 and females were 40. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). ICT skill was low (50), medium (125) and high (35). The difference was significant (P- 0.01). Subjects had knowledge regarding facebook (180), google (150), email (165), youtube (170) and twitter (90). Conclusion- There is need to inculcate in nursing students regarding the usage of computer, social media. The learning ability can be enhanced in the students by proper guiding and training.
