Latest Advancements in Caries Prevention- A Review
Amolkumar Lokade, Seema Thakur, Cheranjeevi Jayam

Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting the human race. It is said that once it occurs, the scar persists throughout life even though lesion is treated. Though it may be argued that disease is not life threatening, the sequelae associated with it have far reaching effects. Dental caries is a site specific disease that undergoes many cycles of demineralization and remineralization during lesion development. Because of its developmental dynamics, the carious lesion can be arrested and even repaired at its early stages without operative intervention by increasing the net mineral gain during the demineralization and remineralization cycles. Factors like host (tooth), substrate (fermentable carbohydrates), microflora (bacteria) and time are essential for caries to occur, if any of these factors are modified, we can prevent or at least limit the progression of dental caries.
