Anxiety, Depression and Stress among Nursing Students in Nursing Colleges of Punjab- A Questionnaire Survey | |

Introduction- It is observed that nursing students undergo tremendous stress during various stages of their course. Occupational mental health and affective well-being among student health professionals has been the focus of increased study in recent years. The present study was conducted to assess level of anxiety and stress and depression among nurses. Materials & Methods- The present study was conducted on 120 nursing students. Parameters such as socio- economic status, residence status, etc. were recorded. We utilized DASS 21items self-report instrument designed to measure the three related negative emotional states of depression, anxiety and tension/stress. This reliable psychological instrument has 21 items in three domains. Each domain comprises of seven items assessing three dimensions of mental health symptoms: depression, anxiety and stress. Results- Age group 17- 20 years had 30, 20-23 years had 72 and 23- 26 years had 18 subjects. The difference was significant (P- 0.05). Socio- economic status was upper (24), middle (31) and lower (65). The difference was significant (P- 0.01).80 subjects had rural and 40 subjects had urban residential background. The difference was significant (P- 0.01). Depression score was normal (62), mild (25), moderate (14), severe (10) and very severe (9). Anxiety score was normal (36), mild (22), moderate (19), severe (25) and very severe (18). Stress score was normal (70), mild (20), moderate (15), severe (10) and very severe (5). The difference was significant (P- 0.02). Conclusion- Stress, anxiety and depression are interlinked. The high work load, lack of free time, stress examination is leading causes.
