A Literature Review of Ergonomics and It’s Risk Factors in Dentistry
Dr.Harsimrandeep Singh, Dr. Simarpreet Singh, Dr. Vivek Vardhan Gupta

Ergonomics encompasses a wider scope than merely preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The effective implementation of ergonomic principles not only promotes high productivity but also mitigates the risk of illnesses and injuries, thereby enhancing worker satisfaction. Conversely, inadequate application of these principles can result in an increase in work-related MSDs. The incidence of MSDs among dental professionals is on the rise, as these practitioners often utilize instruments and equipment in postures that do not align with optimal working conditions or individual physical characteristics. Literature identifies several critical ergonomic risk factors, including awkward postures during task execution, the exertion of force, repetitive movements, and exposure to vibration. Additional risk factors encompass prolonged static positions, contact stress affecting muscles and tendons, and exposure to extreme temperatures. These ergonomic constraints significantly contribute to the development of musculoskeletal injuries. This study aims to provide essential background information on ergonomics, enabling dental practitioners to recognize ergonomic risk factors and engage in informed discussions regarding ergonomics, its diagnosis, treatment, and regulatory aspects. For practitioners seeking to enhance their work environment, an incremental approach to improvement is recommended, as briefly outlined in this study. Furthermore, this research will raise awareness of potential risk factors prevalent in the construction industry. Keywords: Ergonomics, Musculo-skeletal disorders
