Prevalence of Tobacco Usage & its Deleterious Effects among Study Population | |

Background: Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. The death toll from tobacco consumption is now 4.9 million people a year. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of use of tobacco in various forms and lesion caused by it in study population. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the department of Oral Medicine & Radiology in year 2016. It included 3800 patients of both genders. A thorough oral examination was performed and out of 3800 patients, 2942 met the criteria and involved in the study. Diagnosis of the lesion was made based on history and clinical features. Various oral mucosal lesions and various forms of tobacco were recorded. Results: Out of 2942 patients, males were 2210 (75%) and females were 732 (25%). The difference was significant (P- 0.01). Age group 20-40 years had 1005 males and 232 females, age group 40-60 years had 550 males and 180 females, age group 60- 80 years consisted of 335 males and 88 females and 320 males and 42 females were above 80 years of age. The difference was significant (P- 0.02). Out of 2210 males and 732 females , 2.7% males and 1% females showed oral mucosal lesions. Various lesions were leukoplakia (males- 15, females- 2), tobacco pouch keratosis (males- 10, females- 1), smoker’s palate (males- 12, females- 0), smoker’s melanosis (males- 8, females- 1), chemical burn (males- 11, females- 2) and lichenoid reaction (males- 4, females- 1). The difference was significant (P- 0.05). Commonly used tobacco products were cigarettes in males (1280) and females (150), gutka in males (320) and females (123), bidi in males (152) and females (102), pan in males (192) and females (263) and multiple forms in males (266) and females (94). The difference was significant (P- 0.05). Reasons for tobacco usage was excessive work load in males (22) and female (1), friend’s company in males (14) and females (2), tension in males (16) and females (3) and habit in males (8) and females (1). The difference was significant (P- 0.01). Conclusion: Tobacco use in any form such as smoking or non smoking tobacco is injurious to health. The need is to create awareness among general population in order to prevent lesions arising from it. |
