SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS- A RELATIONSHIP WORTH EXPLORATION

Introduction: In recent years, there has been an increasing body of research investigating role of sleep deprivation in pathogenesis of various chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases; Periodontitis is a set of inflammatory diseases affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth. Sleeping is a basic human need and is a vital part of the foundation for good health and well-being throughout your lifetime. Sleep deficiency can lead to physical and mental health problems, and  is linked to many chronic health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke,  obesity, and depression. Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess if there is an association of sleep deprivation with chronic periodontal diseases. Material & Methods: A total of 150 subjects (78 males and 72 females), ranging from 25-55 yrs of age were assessed. Subjects were examined for the assessment of gingival index (GI), pocket probing depth (PPD) and PSQI questionnaire for sleep deprivation assessment. Results: The results showed a positive correlation of GI and PPD with the PSQI score in the studied groups. Conclusion: This study attempts to relate sleep deprivation which has become a common factor in todays busy life style to the general periodontal health of the individuals.
