Background: Stroke is clinical syndrome characterized by rapidly developing clinical symptoms and/or signs of focal neurological deficit and at times global loss of cerebral function, lasting for more than 24 hours or leading to death. The present study was conducted to evaluate D-dimer levels in stroke patients. Materials & Methods: 65 stroke patients of both genders were assessed using NIHSS scale. 5 ml venous blood was taken for measurement of D-dimer level. Results: 21 males and 15 females had ACI, 10 males and 12 females had PCI and 4 males and 3 females had ICH. The difference was non- significant (P> 0.05). Out of 48 cases of raised D-dimer level, most of the patients were in age group of 51-60 years followed by 41-50 years (15). There was a positive correlation between the age and D-dimer was seen (p< 0.05). 88% smokers, 65% diabetics and 76% hypertensive patients had D- dimer level. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). The maximum (23) patients with severe stroke had raised d- dimer level. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: D-dimer values are increased in stroke patients. The rise was statistically significant with the increase severity assessed with NIHSS score. Hence, D-dimer values in stroke constitutes an important parameter in the evaluation of stroke. |
