THE CURRENT STATUS OF FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY IN INDIA: PERCEPTION OF POSTGRADUATES, FACULTY MEMBERS, INTERNS AND GENERAL DENTAL PRACTITIONERS

Aim: The aim of our study was to analyse the knowledge of dentists related to forensic odontology, aptitude of forensic odontology and status of forensic odontology among the dental surgeons in India. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among the interns, postgraduates, faculty members and general practitioners in the south-western coastal region, related to the knowledge about forensic odontology. Results: Among the 310 respondents, 85% of the respondents believe that FO should be included in the UG curriculum. More than 70% of the subjects have the opinion that oral pathology should be handling the MDS curriculum till a pool of forensic odontology faculty are generated. Conclusion: 82%of the respondents believe that the depth of knowledge imparted in forensic odontology for UG curriculum is inadequate, and most of them have the opinion that FO has to be introduced in the UG curriculum as a separate subject.
