Assessment of Efficacy of Two Different Irrigation Solutions- An in-vitro study

Background: The chances of a favourable outcome with root canal treatment are significantly higher if infection is eradicated effectively before the root canal system is obturated. However, if microorganisms persist at the time of obturation, or if they penetrate into the canal after obturation, there is a high risk of treatment failure. Root canal irrigation is a significant component of root canal therapy. Hence, we planned the present study to evaluate the efficiency of different root canal irrigants. Materials & methods: The present study included assessment of efficacy of different irrigating solution protocols in the smear layer removal. A total of 60 extracted teeth were included in the present study. All the teeth were freshly extracted mandibular first premolars. Group 1 included tooth specimen in which irrigation was done with normal saline, and group 2 included tooth specimen in which irrigation was done using NaOCl and EDTA mixture. Irrigation was done thoroughly in all the specimens. Criteria given previously in the literature were used for evaluation of tooth specimens which categorized scores into 0, 1, 2 and 3. All the results were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: Mixture of NaOCl and EDTA had significantly higher irrigating efficacy in comparison to normal saline (P- value < 0.05). Conclusion: Root canal irrigation is a significant step for the success of root canal therapy. Higher efficacy is associated with NaOCl and EDTA in comparison to normal saline.
