Serum levels of ceruplasmin in oral cancer patients

Background: Generally, head and neck cancers constitute between 5 and 50 % of all cancers globally. According to the literature over 90% of human copper is associated with ceruplasmin (Cp). Hence; the present study was conducted for assessing serum levels of ceruplasmin in oral cancer patients. Materials & Methods: A total of 25 oral cancer patients and 25 healthy controls were enrolled. Complete demographic and clinical details of all the patients were recorded. Oral examination was carried out and findings were recorded. All the patients were recalled in the morning and fresh blood samples were obtained. All the samples were sent to laboratory where auto-analyze was used for evaluation of serum Ceruplasmin levels. All the results were recorded in Microsoft excel sheet and were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: Mean serum Ceruloplasmin levels among patients of the study group and control group was 58.6 mg/dL and 35.6 mg/dL respectively. While comparing statistically, significant results were obtained. Conclusion: Serum Ceruloplasmin levels are significantly altered in OSCC patients. Key words: Ceruplasmin, Oral cancer
