Assessment of Prevalence of Denture Stomatitis in A Known Population: A Cross- Sectional Study

Background: Denture stomatitis, a common disorder affecting denture wearers, is characterized as inflammation and erythema of the oral mucosal areas covered by the denture. Despite its commonality, the etiology of denture stomatitis is not completely understood. Hence; we planned the present study to assess the prevalence of denture stomatitis in a known population. Materials & methods: We planned the present study to assess of prevalence of denture stomatitis among a known population.  A total of 400 patients were included in the present study. Complete clinical examination of all the patients was done. Detailed history of the patients affected with denture stomatitis was done followed evaluation of its risk factors. All the results were recorded on the excel sheet and were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: Denture stomatitis was found to be present in 15 percent of the study population. Vitamin deficiency and smoking habit were found to be the predominant risk factors for the development of denture stomatitis. Conclusion: Denture stomatitis is frequently encountered among denture wearers.  However; vitamin deficiency and smoking habit were found to be the risk factors for its development.
