Comparison of Orbit Length, Width and Index on Dry Skulls- A Measurement Study
Comparison of Orbit Length, Width and Index on Dry Skulls- A Measurement Study

Background: Among modern human groups there is considerable variability in the characteristics of the orbit. Orbital morphometric study provides parameters for preoperative planning and prediction of postoperative outcome. The present study was conducted to compare the orbital height, width and index between both genders. Materials & Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy on 10 dry skulls.  The measurements of orbital length, orbital width and orbital index (OI) were performed with the help of vernier caliper calibrated in millimeters in both genders. The measurement was done on both left and right side. Results: The mean± S.D of orbit length in males was 3.74± 0.20 and in females was 3.26± 0.18. The difference was significant (P-0.05). The mean± S.D of orbit width in males was 4.34± 0.25 and in females was 4.06± 0.12. The difference was significant (P-0.01). The mean± S.D of orbit index (OI) in males was 84. 70± 8.11 and in females was 84.02± 8.03. The difference was non- significant (P-0.08). The orbital length on right side was 3.56 as compared to 3.52 on left side. Width was 4.16 on right side and 4.19 on left side. Orbital index was 84.32 on right side and 84.41 on left side. The difference was non- significant (P>0.05). Conclusion: Orbital length, with and index is effective in the field of forensic sciences. Careful analysis is required which helps in gender identification.
