Mohit Sharma, Jyoti Bhartiya

Background: Diabetes is the most frequent endocrine-metabolic disorder in children and adolescents, and has remained the main type of diabetes in children. The present study was conducted to assess hearing loss in children with diabetes. Materials & Methods: 60 children with confirmed diabetes (type I). Equal number of healthy subjects (control) was enrolled. Both air and bone conduction were tested at frequencies between 250-8000 Hz and 250-4000 Hz respectively. Hearing impairment was noted at auditory threshold above 25 dB in any frequency and the magnitude of hearing loss was assessed according to auditory threshold in conversational frequencies only. Results: Group I had 40 males and 20 females and group II had 35 males and 25 females. Sensorineural hearing loss was seen in 7 in group I and 1 in group II, light SNH seen in 9 in group I and 2 in group II and moderate SNH seen 4 in group I. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: Children with diabetes had higher hearing loss as compared to healthy non diabetics. Key words: Diabetics, Hearing, Sensorineural
